Renting a storage unit is a fantastic way to get the extra space you need—but figuring out exactly how much space that is can be a challenge. You don’t want to pay for space you don’t end up using, but you also don’t want to find out that you underestimated the amount of stuff you have to store.

What Storage Unit Size Is Right for You?

Here’s a quick guide to help you determine which unit size is best for your needs:

  • 5×10 – Roughly the size of a large walk-in closet, a 5×10 storage unit can store 10–15 standard boxes, small furniture, outdoor gear, bicycles, or even a queen-sized mattress. It’s ideal if you are decluttering or need temporary storage for a move or dorm room.
  • 10×10 – If you live in a studio or a one- to two-bedroom apartment, a 10×10 storage unit can hold its contents fairly well. You can store a couch, dining set, bed, a few appliances, and 40–60 boxes.
  • 10×15 – A 10×15 storage unit is best for the contents of a two- to three-bedroom home. You should be able to store multiple bedroom sets, appliances, and small vehicles, or roughly 100 boxes if you aren’t storing any other items.
  • 10×25 – About the size of a one-car garage, a 10×25 storage unit is ideal for storing the contents of a three- to five-bedroom home. Major appliances, multiple bedroom sets, living and dining furniture, and small recreational vehicles can fit comfortably inside the unit along with 100–150 boxes.
